Gerard Schaefer Suitcase killer
"suitcase killer" refers to the case of convicted murderer, Gerard Schaefer. Schaefer was a former police officer and serial killer who was active in the 1960s and 1970s. He was convicted of two murders, but is believed to have committed many more.
One of the murders for which Schaefer was convicted involved the killing of two young women, Georgia Jessup and Susan Place. The bodies of the two women were found in separate suitcases that had been dumped in a canal. This is where Schaefer earned the nickname "suitcase killer."
Schaefer was arrested in 1972 and was eventually convicted of the murders of Jessup and Place in 1973. He was sentenced to life in prison. However, he was suspected of committing many other murders, and some believe that he may have been responsible for the deaths of up to 30 other people.
In 1995, Schaefer was killed in prison by a fellow inmate, who claimed that he was acting in self-defense. The case of Gerard Schaefer remains one of the most notorious and disturbing examples of serial murder in American history.
